We begin with an engaging opening, a natural pull to wade deeper into the story. We have a lot to connect to — characters, setting, cultural traditions of Taiwan – and author excels marvelously in presenting each for the reader to easily absorb. Setting enjoys the author’s great instinct for the visual and sensory to bring each scene to life. What gives this novel depth are the parallel themes running throughout. Both JonSun and Christa struggle with self-esteem and self-worth; ironically, this does not stop JonSun from trying to interfere with his son’s relationship! “Flipping” is an appropriate title and is artfully applied to both the Tangs’ career and Christa’s dream; and the physical hardships of Christa’s syndrome and SuAnn’s cancer are linked as well.
